Stone Forest (Shilin)

A vast area of limestone formations resembling a forest of stone pillars, created over 270 million years.

History & Background

The Stone Forest (Shilin) was formed over 270 million years ago when the area was underwater. As the sea receded, limestone formations were exposed and eroded by rain and wind into pillar-like shapes resembling a forest of stone. The site covers 350 square kilometers and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Local Yi people have legends about the stones being petrified maidens.
