History & Background

Shangri-La (formerly Zhongdian) was renamed in 2001 after James Hilton's novel "Lost Horizon." At 3,200m elevation, it serves as the gateway to Tibetan culture in Yunnan. The town is home to Songzanlin Monastery, modeled after the Potala Palace, and Pudacuo National Park, China's first national park meeting IUCN standards.
