Zhangjiajie requires 3-4 days to experience its main attractions. Day 1: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — Golden Whip Stream hike in the morning, Yuanjiajie (Avatar Mountains) in the afternoon via Bailong Elevator. Day 2: Tianzi Mountain for sunrise (if staying in the park), then Yangjiajie for the Natural Great Wall and cliff walkways. Day 3: Tianmen Mountain — world's longest cable car, Glass Walkway, and Tianmen Cave. Day 4: Glass Bridge at Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon (book well ahead) and Baofeng Lake. Staying overnight inside the national park (at Wulingyuan) saves travel time and allows early morning access before crowds arrive.

Getting to Zhangjiajie

By Air

Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG) is 5km from the city center, with flights from Beijing (2.5h), Shanghai (2h), Xi'an (1.5h), Chengdu (1.5h), and Guangzhou (1.5h). International flights connect to Seoul, Bangkok, and other Asian cities seasonally. A taxi to the city center costs 15-20 RMB (10 minutes). To reach Wulingyuan (national park entrance), take a bus from the airport to Zhangjiajie Bus Station, then transfer to a Wulingyuan bus (12 RMB, 45 minutes).

By Train

Zhangjiajie Railway Station is in the city center, with conventional trains to Changsha (4-5h), Guangzhou (12h), and Beijing (22h). The new Zhangjiajie West Station (high-speed rail) opened in 2021, connecting to Changsha (1.5h), and other cities via the Zhangjichang high-speed line. High-speed trains from Changsha run every 30 minutes. From the railway station, buses to Wulingyuan depart every 10 minutes (12 RMB, 45 minutes). Book train tickets via 12306.cn.

By Bus

Long-distance buses connect Zhangjiajie to Changsha (4 hours, 120 RMB), Fenghuang Ancient Town (4 hours), and other Hunan cities. Buses to Wulingyuan (national park) depart from Zhangjiajie Bus Station every 10 minutes (12 RMB, 45 minutes). Buses to the Glass Bridge / Grand Canyon depart from the city center (1 hour). For Tianmen Mountain, the cable car lower station is walking distance from the railway station.

Local Transport

Within Zhangjiajie city, taxis start at 5 RMB for the first 1.6km. Buses cost 1-2 RMB. To reach the national park (Wulingyuan), take bus 1 or 2 from the city center to the bus station, then transfer to the Wulingyuan bus. Inside the national park, free shuttle buses connect all scenic areas — study the route map at the entrance. For the Glass Bridge, book a taxi or bus to the Grand Canyon area (1 hour from city). In Wulingyuan town, everything is walkable. E-bike rentals are available for exploring nearby villages.
