Guilin Travel Guide

A classic Guilin-Yangshuo itinerary spans 4-5 days. Day 1: Arrive in Guilin, visit Elephant Trunk Hill and Reed Flute Cave. Day 2: Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo (4 hours, the scenic highlight of any China trip). Afternoon in Yangshuo West Street. Day 3: Bamboo rafting on Yulong River, countryside cycling through karst peaks and rice paddies. Day 4: Xingping old town and the 20 RMB banknote scenery; optional Impression Sanjie Liu light show in the evening. Day 5: Day trip to Longji Rice Terraces (2.5 hours from Guilin) or return. For photography enthusiasts, add a sunrise shoot at Xingping and a sunset at Yangshuo's Big Banyan Tree area.

Getting to Guilin

By Air

Guilin Liangjiang International Airport (KWL) is 28km southwest of the city center, with direct flights from Beijing (3h), Shanghai (2h), Xi'an (2h), Chengdu (1.5h), and international routes from Hong Kong, Seoul, and Southeast Asian cities. Airport shuttle buses run to the city center every 30 minutes (20 RMB, 45 minutes). Taxis cost approximately 80-100 RMB. For Yangshuo, direct airport buses are available (50 RMB, 90 minutes).

By Train

Guilin has three railway stations: Guilin North (high-speed rail hub), Guilin (conventional trains), and Guilin West (some high-speed services). High-speed trains connect to Guangzhou (2.5h), Shenzhen (3h), Nanning (2.5h), and Changsha (2.5h). Direct high-speed trains from Beijing take about 10 hours; from Shanghai about 9 hours. For Yangshuo, take a high-speed train to Yangshuo Station (30 minutes from Guilin North), then a 40-minute bus to Yangshuo town. Book via 12306.cn; foreign passports supported.

By Bus

Direct buses from Guilin to Yangshuo depart every 15 minutes from the Guilin Bus Station (25 RMB, 1.5 hours). Buses to Longji Rice Terraces depart from Guilin Qintan Bus Station (2 hours). For the Li River cruise pier (Zhujiang Pier), take bus 16 from the city center or a taxi (40 RMB). Buses to Sanjiang (Dong minority villages) and Longsheng (hot springs) depart from the main bus station.

Local Transport

In Guilin city, buses cost 1-2 RMB and cover all attractions. Taxis start at 9 RMB. In Yangshuo, the town center is walkable. E-bike and bicycle rentals (30-50 RMB/day) are the best way to explore the countryside. Motorbike taxis are available for short trips. For the Li River cruise, your hotel or a travel agency can arrange transport to the pier. In Longji, local minivans transport visitors between villages and viewpoints. The Guilin public transport card works on city buses but not in Yangshuo.
