History & Background

The Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Rice Terraces were built during the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368) and completed over 400 years. Carved into steep mountainsides by Zhuang and Yao ethnic minorities, the terraces rise from 300m to 1,100m elevation. The irrigation system uses natural springs, demonstrating centuries of agricultural engineering.
