Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

China's first national forest park, featuring thousands of sandstone pillars, deep ravines, and diverse wildlife.

History & Background

Established in 1982 as China's first national forest park, Zhangjiajie covers 4,810 hectares of quartzite sandstone pillars. The park's 3,000+ narrow peaks, some rising over 1,000m, were formed by erosion over 380 million years. The landscape inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains in James Cameron's Avatar (2009).
