The Karakoram Highway, completed in 1979, is one of the world's highest paved roads, reaching 4,733m at Khunjerab Pass on the Pakistan border. Following ancient Silk Road routes through the Pamir and Karakoram ranges, it connects Kashgar to Islamabad. The highway passes through some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on Earth.
