Echoing Sand Dunes

Massive sand dunes near Dunhuang where you can ride camels and slide down the slopes. Crescent Lake sits at the base.

History & Background

The Echoing Sand Dunes (Mingsha Shan) near Dunhuang rise 250m above the surrounding desert. The sand produces a booming sound when sliding down the dunes, hence the name. At the base lies Crescent Lake (Yueyaquan), a miraculous spring-fed oasis that has never dried up despite being surrounded by desert. The site has been a landmark on the Silk Road for 2,000 years.
