The Flaming Mountains (Huoyan Shan) near Turpan are red sandstone hills that appear to burn in the sunlight due to their iron-rich composition. Temperatures here can reach 50°C in summer, making it one of China's hottest places. The mountains were mentioned in the classic novel "Journey to the West" as an obstacle faced by the monk Xuanzang.
