History & Background

The Longmen Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contain over 100,000 Buddhist statues carved into cliff faces along the Yi River. Created over 400 years from the Northern Wei to Tang dynasties (493-907 AD), the grottoes represent the pinnacle of Chinese stone carving art. The largest statue, Vairocana Buddha, stands 17m tall.
