History & Background

The Dujiangyan Irrigation System, built in 256 BC by Li Bing, is the world's oldest surviving irrigation project still in use. Without dams, it controls flooding and irrigates the Chengdu Plain using a system of levees and channels. The engineering marvel has protected the region from floods for over 2,200 years and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
