Zhangye Danxia

Spectacular rainbow-colored rock formations created by mineral deposits over millions of years.

History & Background

Zhangye Danxia Landform, created over 24 million years, features spectacular rainbow-colored rock formations. Mineral deposits of iron, manganese, and other elements created layers of red, orange, yellow, green, and white sandstone. Erosion exposed these layers, creating the dramatic striped mountains. It is part of the Zhangye National Geopark.
