History & Background

Labrang Monastery in Xiahe, founded in 1709, is one of the six great monasteries of the Gelugpa school. With over 1,000 monks and 60 halls, it is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery outside Tibet. The monastery features the world's longest kora (pilgrimage circuit) at 3.5km, lined with over 1,700 prayer wheels.
