History & Background

Songzanlin Monastery, built in 1679, is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. Modeled after the Potala Palace in Lhasa, it features similar white and red buildings on a hillside. The monastery houses over 700 monks and serves as the spiritual center for Tibetan Buddhists in the region. It was damaged during the Cultural Revolution and restored in the 1980s.
