The Leshan Giant Buddha, carved into a cliff at the confluence of three rivers, stands 71m tall and is the world's largest stone Buddha statue. Construction began in 713 AD and took 90 years to complete. The statue was designed to calm the turbulent waters that endangered shipping. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China's most impressive monuments.
